چکیده

The global population status of many reptiles, particularly tortoises as one the most threatened tetrapod groups, necessitates conservation efforts and study. Baseline information about habitat use can help formulate strategies improve effectiveness surveys. I studied by Karoo Dwarf Tortoises (Chersobius boulengeri), an endangered South African endemic with only known to contain males, females, juveniles, aid conservationists in assessing which nature reserves (with incidental records) potential new may sustain populations, inform surveys for additional populations. Available microhabitats rock types were mapped using unmanned aerial vehicle. analyzed tortoise distribution determined home range sizes (minimum convex polygons) minimum daily movement distances nine males 16 females radio transmitters. All fieldwork was conducted spring 2018 2019, summer 2018, 2020. Relatively high numbers inhabited sills (i.e., exposed dolerite intrusions between sandstone) that contained ample retreats among boulders rocks, whereas relatively few lived on level plateaus might expose them predatory birds. Despite their apparent preference sills, able survive ranges little sill microhabitat. rather sedentary, having small sexually seasonally similar (1.10–1.14 ha) (27.6–28.4 m/day), although larger than those related Speckled Tortoise signatus), possibly a result different productivities. Conservationists surveyors should consider appear important Tortoises, but generic rocky slopes also harbor individuals. Future studies could address aspects underlie microhabitat use, such availability vegetation, integrate available spatial model.

Habitat use by the arid-dwelling land snail Iberus g. gualtieranus

Iberus gualtieranus gualtieranus is an arid-dwelling land snail that needs to use karstic fissures as refuge in order to survive in arid environments. Karstic fissures are primarily on vertical rocky walls. Because displacement is costly to terrestrial gastropods, it is predictable that this snail will move on vertical substrates near its refuges. However, this species eats primarily phanerogam...

Habitat Use by the Banded Rail

The distribution of banded rail habitat use in a saltmarsh was measured by recording the rate at which their footprints accumulated. The relationships between habitat use, time of day, state of the tide, and 15 environmental parameters, were investigated using multivariate analysis. Banded rails were most active in the morning and evening and immediately after a tide. They did not venture far f...

Use of thermospot by slum dwelling mothers.

Thermospot was stuck to the infant’s abdomen over the liver and the mother taught how to interpret it. Mothers were counseled on the importance of keeping the baby warm and told how to do so. If the device came unstuck it was reapplied with transparent tape. The site was inspected for skin damage or irritation. The thermospot was removed on day 7. Information from mothers on acceptability, the ...

The Karoo Array Telescope

The Karoo Array Telescope (KAT) will be a “1% demonstrator” for the SKA, located in a radio quiet reserve in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Besides developing technologies for the SKA project, the KAT will perform wide-field surveys that will be precursors to the eventual SKA products. The nominal specification for the KAT are listed, and the proposed science th...

Habitat Use by Sonoran Desert Tortoises

The distribution of desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii) spans a wide range of biotic and abiotic conditions in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, with physical and behavioral differences distinguishing tortoises inhabiting the Mojave Desert from those inhabiting the Sonoran Desert. Relative to tortoise populations in the Mojave Desert, populations in the Sonoran Desert ha...
